Neuro-Linguistic Programming Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) was developed in the early 1970's by an information scientist and a linguist (Richard Bandler and John Grinder) at the University of California at Santa Cruz. They were intrigued that people with similar education, training, background and years of experience were achieving widely varying results ranging from wonderful to mediocre and wanted to know what was making the difference. What was the secret of effective people's success? Bandler and Grinder decided to see if they could model the behavior of highly effective people and duplicate their level of competency. They focused on communication (verbal language, body language, eye movements, and other modes of communication) hypothesizing that the modeling, the brain can learn the healthy patterns and behaviors and that this would bring about positive physical and emotional effects. What emerged from this early work was the science of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, ("NLP"). The basis premise of NLP is that the words we use reflect an inner, subconscious perception of our feeling and beliefs. If these words and perceptions are inaccurate, they will create an underlying problem as long as we continue to think we are. NLP helps to identify unhealthy traits and replace them with positive thoughts and patterns that promote wellness. NLP practitioners analyze every word and phase we use to describe our symptoms or concerns about our physical and mental health. They examine our facial expressions and body movements. After determining the problems in our perceptions, they help us understand the root causes and then work with us to remodel our thoughts and mental associations in order to change our preconceived beliefs. By changing our beliefs we can change our behavior and thus achieve the success we deserve.
